*Folding Space* is an interactive moving-image installation that transforms an autorefractor, a piece of medical equipment, into an artistic medium. The work was created using TouchDesigner to construct a dual-perspective imaging system, eye-tracking functions, and a network of interactive program nodes.
Through mechanisms such as delayed feedback, gaze-triggered responses, and image distortion, the work investigates the power relations embedded in the acts of “seeing” and “being seen,” as well as the participation of subjective consciousness within space. By deconstructing and repurposing the original functions of the medical device, the installation establishes a dual spatial structure of “peering” and “being looked back at,” drawing the viewer into a temporal and spatial loop in which the self and the other continually overlap.
Focusing on the folding of space and the mechanisms through which it is reorganized, the work constructs a perception-driven sensory space that is nonlinear, multidimensional, and composed of intersecting temporal and spatial layers. By materializing perceptual mechanisms through the form of installation art, it endows space with memory, delay, and uncertainty, thereby reconstructing the viewer’s experience of the act of looking.
