DIVERSIS IOVENIBUS UNA (a nation of different children)
"Diversis Gentibus Una": a nation of different people.
This was written on the first coin minted by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany for the city of Livorno in 1606.
In the context Livorno, by its own historical foundation, possesses the features of the multi-ethnic city where migrants, called for its population through the Livornine Laws issued by the Medici in 1593, reproduced in the territory the architectures and sacred places of their community of origin with dynamics of settlement on the territory composed of homogeneous ethnic communities.
Since three years we activated the "Laboratory of photographic memory A. Benci" to build an archive over time through the eyes of children. Enrich their point of view by observing their growth. Photography courses as learning to critical vision in which they are allowed the freely to represent their surroundings and finally create exhibitions of photos and video installations to become aware of the work done.
These school, located in the heart of Livorno, have a very high percentage of migratory origin and characterize the identity of the neighborhoods that host them, making them a symbolic place, where the intersection of different nuclei but united by similar realities merges.
This work represent the sight and the vision of these children, their ways to look the world, with different cultures and origins but with a common present in which grow together and build the future society.
