Light
Remanence presents a relic of the future; a body that is neither male nor female in appearance but at once refers to both the histories of classical sculpture as well as a speculative cyborgian body of the electromechanical future. For this project, we as a couple created a new hermaphrodite body. This body is the combined 3D scan of both of our bodies. From the digital form we made, we created physical individual works of art with a machine embedded inside of it. The machine manifestation is a kinetic light from within the sculpture that recreates the gesture of scanning a body as viewers are caught scanning it.
The fear of the machine has a long history in western and eastern culture. History teaches us, that any country with a fast pace of technological growth, leads to fear and mistrust of the machine. We, as artists that use technology, are both addressing those issues. For us, the future is far less frightening, we adore the machine and appreciate how we, as species are evolving with it.
Our work will create a simulation of an interaction between person and machine. Through our work, we want to offer an experience that creates an opportunity for the viewer to engage with technology in a different way from what they are custom to. As an Israeli and Chinese, we both feel that our countries are deferent in the sense of accepting the machine involvement in our biological nature as an extension to our bodies. We created this project as a deep reflection on the human future bodies in different cultures.
In this work, we will build an extended version and combine our forces to make one big work of art with multiple figures. This version will add an interactive element that will act as an engaging point between the technology and the viewers. A space with 5-6 sculptured body figures. In the middle of the space, there will be a “controlling” station platform, from which the viewer can interact with the sculptured body figures. The station will have 5-6 pyramid-shaped controllers, controlled by the touch and distance of the hands. Each pyramid-shaped controller will control the light behavior coming from one or two of the sculptured body figures. Setting this system in this way while the viewer is positioned in the “controlling” station platform, will create an extension of the human experience. Furthermore, once the viewer is controlling with two of his hands one side of the system with some of the body figures, the other side will run automatically. The idea behind it is to create a discussion about the future of our Human and machine power balance. While doing so we are hoping to raise questions about the relations between humans and the Machines, alongside creating discussions about our future bodies.
