*The Fourteenth Piece* originates from my personal viewing experience, exploring the transformations artworks undergo when transmitted across different media. The left screen shows the physical environment where the artwork resides: architecture, materials, scale and audiences together form the site of the work.
On the middle screen, thirteen artworks from diverse civilizations are converted into flat images on paper and screens. This enables faster, more accessible and low-cost circulation, yet the weight, scale, surface texture and locality of the originals are temporarily concealed.
On the right screen, artificial intelligence acts as a new medium. Cameras detect the audience’s bodies and photographing gestures; the piece halts, dissipates and regenerates in the act of being watched.
The work does not seek to judge whether online or in-person viewing is superior. For many people, books, posters and the internet are the most practical ways to encounter art. Standing before an original artwork, meanwhile, delivers tactile and spatial experiences that flat images cannot replace. These two modes of viewing coexist and collectively shape our understanding of art today.
The first thirteen pieces are artworks that are seen, circulated and transformed. This installation, co-created by artificial intelligence, media and the audience, is the fourteenth piece.
