We aimed our camera at the grand industrial landscape of the abandoned thermal power plant cooling tower in Xianning, Hubei. Rust and Bud · Ruin Theatre does not merely dwell on narrating the decay of the ruins. Instead, through every stretch of muscle and every touch of the toe against the ground, it salvages and amplifies the vigorous, thriving life once hidden under industrial dust, which bursts forth quietly from the rusted crevices of steel bars.
The unfiltered afternoon sunlight slants and bursts through the circular dome of the cooling tower, like a golden waterfall stripped of all industrial noise. It illuminates head-on the years-long silent interplay between russet rust stains and vivid green moss sprawling across the steel plates, then falls upon the dancer’s sweat-kissed shoulders, lighting up the profound bond between humans and this land that has evolved from confrontation to full embrace.
Here, dance has long transcended the confines of conventional stage performance. It becomes a gentle yet powerful metaphor for restoration: awakening the slumbering relic with the warmth of a living body, bridging the dialogue between past and future with rhythmic breath, and ultimately striking a chord deep within every viewer — after human industrial civilization has traversed the narrow path of unremitting destruction, what is the way forward to the long-haul symbiosis with nature?
