strata is a spatial light art installation located near the iconic Rockbund Wharf that acts as a physical metaphor for Shanghai's urban spirit by exploring the city's historical connection to silk and textiles. The work consists of a strictly geometric, modular framework in which meticulously tensioned, semi-transparent textile layers are suspended at precisely calculated intervals. Utilizing advanced spatial projection mapping, custom-developed hardware systems, and animations synchronized to a spatial soundscape, beams of light are driven through these staggered fabrics to create a living, holographic volume of light. As viewers move around the piece, the structural framework reveals a dual nature: from the side, it acts as a transparent study of spatial depth and engineering, while from the front, it collapses into a singular, infinitely deep optical corridor.
