Artist Statement Draft
Echoes of Suzhou Creek is an interactive light and sound installation inspired by the water, bridges, embankments and everyday movements along Suzhou Creek. The creek carries memories of industry, transportation, settlement and urban renewal. It is both a historical waterway and a contemporary public interface where the city meets daily life.
The work transforms a riverside site, bridge passage or embankment into a responsive light-and-sound environment. When no one is present, the installation remains in a quiet state, with subtle breathing patterns of light. As visitors walk through the area, their steps generate ripples of light, as if the river briefly records their presence. When visitors pause, a soft sound-mark appears around them. When several people gather, these marks connect into a temporary network, accompanied by gentle harmonies drawn from water sounds, bridge echoes and abstracted urban textures.
Rather than creating a loud visual spectacle, the project proposes a restrained and low-carbon form of public light art. It responds to the theme Light of Shanghai through technology, memory, future-oriented sustainability and everyday participation. The installation invites the public to experience Suzhou Creek not only as scenery, but as a living urban body that listens, responds and slowly lets each trace return to the flow of the river.
