The latest research by Deniz Vatansever's team reveals that human aestheticexperience is jointly organized by two brain systems that respectively encode visualsemantics and hedonic value, and that professional artistic experience can alter theway the brain processes beauty. Extending this frontier exploration, the art collectivePRIMAL ECHO uses real-time flowing EEG signals as its medium to construct animmersive field of aesthetic interaction. Taking artworks from both Eastern andWestern traditions as objects of perception, the work uses a portable EEG device tocapture viewers' neural responses during the act of looking. The device primarilydetects changes in viewers' Alpha and Theta waves, which correspond respectively tohe degree of immersive engagement and the intensity of emotional resonance withinaesthetic experience. Through the real-time generative visualization of dynamic EEGactivity, Wildheart Beat seeks to reveal the patterns of neural activity responsible forvisual perception and emotional evaluation when the brain encounters works of art, allowing aesthetic intuitions and inner mental states-latent deep withinconsciousness and previously unspoken-to come into view.
