“A Proxy Sample of an Intimate Relationship” is a techno-ethical video work that examines the mechanism through which AI intervenes in communication within intimate relationships. In the work, the artist performs the role of a “wife” and engages in a simulated conversation with an AI-generated “proxy wife.” As emotions accumulate during an argument, the real “wife” gradually loses control of her expression, while the emotions of the “AI proxy wife” are stabilized by the algorithm. Eventually, the AI voice begins to replace the real wife’s voice, acting on her behalf to complete the expression of her emotions.

By placing live-action footage of the artist and an AI-generated character within the same dialogue interface, and by using an extremely elongated frame format together with strong contrasts of light and shadow, the work reveals the fractures produced when technology intervenes in intimate relationships. It further raises ethical questions about what happens when human emotions are smoothed, regulated, and rewritten by algorithms.
