Control Club is an immersive audiovisual theater piece built in a game engine and presented within a circular matrix screen, constructing an alienated digital world where the virtual and real intertwine. In this algorithmic realm, participants race through data highways and toil in virtual factories—trapped in a system where control and desire collide, and bodies and consciousness dissolve into data streams, quietly transformed into computational units in an invisible war.
Here, the game engine is not merely a tool but a metaphor for algorithmic governance—shaping perception, behavior, and even desire through programmable logic. The piece critiques how technocratic systems absorb attention, feedback, and engagement into tightly controlled loops of gratification and control.
Murphy Nile uses “engagement” as a trap, crafting a hypnotic, closed-loop experience through rhythmic pacing, visual intensity, and structured rewards. Within this framework, modeling and simulation mirror the soft discipline of modern systems: dazzling yet hollow spectacles, quantified goals, and precisely timed incentives. Despite the order and immersion, what remains absent is any path toward genuine autonomy.
