Intro: Petko Tanchev is a visual and media artist based in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In 2008, he graduated from National Academy of Art, Sofia with a bachelor’s in Scenography and continued with a master’s in Original Visual Performance Design. He has worked as a stage and costume designer, with a keen focus on incorporating video installations in live theatrical performances. He also did numerous art projects that have been featured in museums, galleries and festivals both nationals and internationally. In 2013, Petko co-founded Melformator, a creative collective specializing in event management, interactive design, and audiovisual performances. In 2016, he became the curator of Creative Media Lab, the digital arts department for The Night of Museums and Galleries in Plovdiv. Petko nurtures the talents of rising artists as a lecturer of Tools for visual programming in the MA Digital Arts program of the National Academy of Art, Sofia. Currently he is also a Ph.D. student in the same school and works as a stage designer in State Opera Plovdiv. Petko Tanchev’s artistic work focuses on the creation of real-time media content for interactive installations and projection mapping, by combining hardware devices and visual programming software. Most of his projects are site-specific and focus on art in a public environment. He creates virtual worlds, which challenge our accepted perceptions of the physical reality we think we know. With an experimental approach, Petko Tanchev welcomes exploring new tools and ever-changing technologies in order to develop cutting-edge creations.
