So Long is a 15-minute virtual reality (VR) experience, engaging audiences through an innovative combination of immersive storytelling, interactive documentary, and educational content. Inspired by Carl Sagan’s iconic exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos, our project reimagines Voyager 1’s final journey, leveraging VR to offer a deeply reflective, educational, and participatory narrative. The experience presents the contents of the Golden Record—including
images, the sounds of Earth, and greetings in 55 languages—in a futuristic style and format within VR. By creatively employing holographic projections, stereoscopic imagery, 3D particle effects, and speech bubbles in VR, the project envisions an enriched and imaginative interface for the future exploration of archival content.
