The Four Seasons of Lingnan - Water Reflects Painting” Immersive Space Works

The immersive digital art exhibition “Four Seasons in Lingnan - Water Reflects Painting” is initiated by Guangzhou Museum of Art (Guangzhou Art Museum) and created by the digital media art design team of School of Visual Art and Design, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

The creation of this work is inspired by the Lingnan School of Painting's unique artistic innovation, especially its expressive “water and powder” technique. We are impressed by this technique, which is different from traditional landscape painting, showing the diversity of light and shadow and the spirit of nature with unique brush strokes and color layers. This technique gives the picture a light and shadow effect with appropriate density and shades, giving people a visual experience that is both real and dreamy, and it is also this kind of tension expression that inspired us to have a new artistic interpretation of 'water' and 'season'.

During the creation process, we spent a lot of time studying the essence of the Lingnan School of Painting, analyzing the works of many masters of the Lingnan School of Painting, exploring the use of color, composition and expression, and ultimately transforming these traditional art elements into a digital art language. In the development and design stage, we used programming algorithms to digitally reproduce the “Water and Powder”, and strive to preserve the randomness and natural flow of this technique in the virtual medium, so as to revitalize it in the light and shadow and water changes.

“Water is an inescapable and poetic thread in the lives of people in Lingnan. It not only permeates the unique geography and climate of Lingnan, but also permeates the cultural fabric of songs, dances, traditional customs and so on. From the meandering waterways to the rain brought by the monsoon, from the lion dance to pray for blessings to the dragon boat race, all of them reveal the spirituality and abundance of “water”. Water has shaped the land of Lingnan, nourished the living beings here, and formed a unique cultural landscape, which is an important symbol of the lifestyle and spirituality of Lingnan people. Taking “water” as the theme is precisely a tribute to and reproduction of the roots and cultural spirit of this region.
