PLASMA 02
The multisensory immersiveness of Basmati by Silvia Grandi University of Bologna.
The encroachment of phenomenal reality implemented by Audrey Coïaniz and Saul Saguatti, in order to shape new visions of worlds, takes strength from the experimentalism of techniques and devices, in a combination of traditional and often obsolete craft practices with the most sophisticated and recent digital solutions and applications. This interweaving emerges not only in their videos, but also and above all in their live performances, where they adopt direct manipulation, often achieved with free pictorial or graphic interventions: the liquids, inks, emulsions, foams, sands or drawings worked and smeared manually lose their material and tangible concreteness once, projected on maxi screens, they are transformed into digital images. The idea behind the poetics of the Basmati duo is to convey the manuality of painting in digital video, attempting to combine a reference to the pastiness and viscerality of the canvas-color approach of informal memory with the fluidity as well as immateriality of the new digital media
The result, therefore, is an integrated circuit of hand-camera-computer, that is, a partnership between the hand that works, draws or molds, the camera that documents and the software that reworks and unifies everything in a kind of "Abstract Digital Expressionism." In the live shows, the video is generated directly under the viewer's gaze, as if the two artists' goal was to combat the evanescence and immateriality of video art through a filming of the microcosm of the basic materials, in a kaleidoscopic succession of real, dreamlike atmospheres and expertly calibrated animation effects.
