Light Skipping Stone skipping used to be a popular game in South China in the ancient times. It is an art of throwing a thin slice of rubble or a flat stone across water in a way that the object could bounce off the surface many times and thus create intangible patterns of ripples, beautiful yet ephemeral. Light Skipping intends to extend our hopes and dreams nurtured in the traditional game of stone skipping. It is an interactive sculpture that trans- forms plum flowers—city flower of Nan- jing—into changing patterns of splashing water drops. Light endows the sculpture with dynamic visual effects. Audien- ces interact with the piece by turning on personal lighting devices such as cell- phones, lighters or torches and waving at the interactive interface. The sculpture then senses the light and immediately activates the game of “light” skipping.
