light
This 10 story lighting fixture hangs in a central outdoor atrium and indoor lobby of a hotel. The form of the sculptural luminaire is a series of rings with addressable LED pendants stretched between them. The fixture was designed and programmed by Moment Factory. They turned us at Digital Ambiance to implement their design through technical design, fabrication, and installation. The main challenge of this build was to remain true to the original design while creating something that would withstand the environment it is installed in and be robust enough to last for years.
LED pucks, small plastic elements, were custom-designed to diffuse the light from the LEDs. The clamshell-like pucks were injection-molded. A small printed circuit board (PCB) was installed in each puck. Each PCB includes six RGB LEDs on the top and bottom essentially delivering 360 degrees of light. The PCB boards are coated to keep them waterproof while the puck housing has holes to allow water to drain.
This piece can be described as a volumetric lighting installation, using pixels suspended within a volume of space to create a “holographic” area in which to run animated lighting patterns. Programming a system like this requires advanced software and lighting control techniques. Both design teams worked together to use Moment Factory's custom lighting control environment and have the control systems in place that were needed for Moment Factory to program and express their animations on the sculpture. One of the signature shows creates a waterfall flowing through the lobby and upward through the glass ceiling into the atrium.
