Bio-Graffics
Concept
Imagine a living graffiti, where the facade is covered in organic shapes originating from living and simulated creatures. They seem to grow out of windows and interact with the elements of the facade - some are attracting them, some are repelling. The facade becomes a playground for the living graffiti.
One set of shapes is the Timelapse recording of the actual organism grown on the model of the building, and another set is simulated.
The living organism used for this project is Physarum Polycephalum.
Physarum is a bright yellow single-celled organism, similar to fungi, that is visible to human eye. It’s one of the largest single-celled organisms in nature. It is harmless to humans and is often used in education.
It grew increasingly popular after it was found that it can be used to solve several mathematical problems or simulate the design of efficient train networks.
Its bright yellow color and intricate branching structures also sparked the imagination of artists and designers.
Method
For this project I intend to build a small scale model of the facade, about 20cm wide, that would be used as a surface to grow Physarum. The model will be placed in the light-isolated box with a controlled light-source and a digital photo camera.
Windows and other interesting elements of the facade will be covered with two types of materials: one that attracts and one that repels the physarum.
The time needed to film Physarum is about 48 hours, and this will result in approx. 3min recording.
When the recording is done, the video file will be added to compositing software where it will be edited together with the simulated images.
The resulting composition would then be masked to exclude windows and other areas.
