Samuel Adam Swope
About
Born in Missouri, 1984. Based in Hong Kong. Samuel Adam Swope is an artist most recognized for his Aerial Art and for inventing novel situations with artistic merit. For him, the Aerial Arts are works that integrate flight or levitation as a means of visual expression, and which may also use air or gas as a physical medium. He believes with innovative techniques and an increasing accessibility of contemporary flight technologies, the possibility for a more radical and spectacular aerial art is possible. Samuel feeds off his innate boyish curiosities, imagination, and mischievous behavior. He follows heuristic methodologies and seriously plays. He fancies apparatuses with aesthetics, craft, and technique, but that maintain a core concept. He sees apparatuses as artifacts of existence and their presence indicate both a real and imaginary experience. When applicable, he invents novel situations with artistic merit. In these novel situations, he introduces the apparatus to challenge cultural constructs, manipulate the norm, and produce intervening spectacle, which is then followed with documenting and storytelling. His continued interest in contemporary uses of apparatuses, performance, moving images, science, technology and DIY culture has enabled him to exhibit and lecture internationally in galleries, micro-cinemas, and academic and cultural institutions. In addition to his own practice, he has held positions universities, including a Senior Research Associate position at City University of Hong Kong: School of Creative Media. He also collaborates with curators, other artists, and cultural producers for special projects.
