Digital artist working on immersive experience (fulldome), video mapping and digital scenography
Intro: Jeremy Oury is a French artist who questions our perception of reality and our relationship to the digital environment through light and sound with an introspection on the evolution of human identity in the digital age. He focuses his artwork on a research about illusions from geometric distortions, on the synesthesia between sound and video, and on immersive forms to disrupt the viewer perception of space. His groundbreaking work has been recognized at international video mapping and fulldome festivals, and exhibited at prestigious digital festivals and exhibitions worldwide.
Filip Roca - 1minute Projection Mapping Competition/ GRAND PRIX video mapping awards 2025 IBISC Another year goes by and we are still 5,389 fanatics of video mapping and competition on the Facebook group LIST OF INTERNATIONAL VIDEO MAPPING OPEN CALL & CONTEST 2026. 33 festivals shared their competition or open call in 2025, a figure equivalent to 2024. Thank you for trusting us to relay their calls on our page. In 2025, there were 13 video mapping competitions. Competitions are falling slightly out of favour, with the trend shifting toward open calls or direct curation. This certainly allows artists to be properly compensated, and these are questions we ask ourselves every year, searching for a sustainable remuneration model for artists in this 'young art field'. However, it blocks the path for young artists and newcomers, who have fewer and fewer opportunities to showcase their talent and get noticed. Let's not forget that many of today's leading artists cut their teeth through competitions. In 2025, we discovered or rediscovered new talents from around the world: Henry hu (Singapore) / Metanoia Creative (Czech Republic) / Studio Moebius (India) and Roberto Photonic (Mexico). Three of them are finalists at the upcoming SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe 2026, following remarkable appearances at other festivals last year. New competitions have emerged : notably for amateurs (small prize pool) and students (León Light Fest in Mexico). The list of competitions and festivals covered by this Facebook group is not exhaustive. Many opportunities remain hidden in the depths of the web. EUROPE The classic European stops remain the Video Mapping Festival contest in Lille, won once again by a German, Hans Bolz, SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe, the Zsolnay Fényfesztivál and Genius Loci Weimar. Eastern Europe is also very active: with the return of LightUp Festival in Romania, a new edition of the LUNAR in Bulgaria, and a new competition with the Portal Festival driven by the artistic collective Elektrick.me. Eastern European artists Vali Chincișan and Ari Dykier are once again very present on several top three. Romania still hosts the IMAPP’s Winners League competition, won in 2025 by Elektrick.me (again !) from Bulgaria and by Belgian studio Glitch for the audience award. IMAPP continues to bring together winners from several international festivals, and now welcomes a second Asian representative alongside the 1minute-PM : the Jakarta Light Festival. ASIA Asia is therefore also very present on the international scene. Starting with China and its Chongqing Light Festival, and the presence of the Chinese artist SKG+ in nearly every competition, marking his strong return to the international stage. The competition is now called Asia Mapping Art Contest. Southeast Asian artists are joining forces through ALIGHT - A SOUTHEAST ASIAN LIGHT NETWORK CONFERENCE https://www.instagram.com/alight.asean/, with several gatherings held across different countries, including Thailand with Bangkok Design Week and Singapore Night Festival. An Asia-focused topic will also be proposed at IBSIC 2026 by Rencontres Audiovisuelles, moderated by Decide Kit. We are already well acquainted with the many festivals in Singapore and the various competitions in Malaysia (Warung Terang by Filamen), etc. Worth noting: the absence of the 2025 edition of 1minute-PM, but the team was also involved in organizing a mapping at the Osaka World Expo, bringing together video mapping artists from around the world. The competition returns on a new building in Tokyo in may 2026 : and it promises to be massive! AMERICAS And what can we say about the American continents, with its wealth of video mapping festivals stretching from San Francisco (Let’s Glow Festival) to upstate New York (LUMA festival ), by way of Cincinnati (Blink) and the beaches of Alys Beach Digital Graffiti. Mexico is no exception, with several new initiatives emerging in Puebla https://www.instagram.com/glowmxfest/, driven by the influence of GLOW Eindhoven, and Guadalajara set to gain a second festival, the MPPF MX, coming November. The Americas can also count on a mutual support network with The Mapping Society, initiated by Omar Serna, including a notably ambitious project for an itinerary video mapping museum. Let's not forget Festival de la Luz de Antigua in Guatemala, and the many festivals across Brazil (Guará Mapping Festival, Festa das Luzes de Joinville, etc.). I'd like to close this brief annual analysis with a few questions. Beyond video mapping competitions, after scanning countless festivals and mappings around the world, we notice that we keep seeing artists with unmistakable styles : Julia Shamsheieva, Yann Nguema, The Fox The Folks, SKG+, Julian Hölscher , ruestungsschmie.de, Ari Dykier, Filip Roca (winner of the Mappings Awards 2025 in Lille), and V.P.M , among others. There is also new original proposal like live mapping where buildings serve as visual stages for DJs, as offered by Jérémie BELLOT and AV EXTENDED. So the world of mapping is still buzzing, but is it managing to reinvent itself? To keep the magic alive for its audience? To claim its place in art history? Is there a lack of a press and art critics specialised in digital art, or women leaders in the field? The creation of a specialised video mapping press, to comment on results and analyse trends, seems an inevitable step in consolidating the structure of the video mapping industry. Thank you all for keeping this informal community alive. In 2018, I created a Facebook group to foster an artistic community of video mapping artists and share festivals opportunities. Each year, I analyze the results of video mapping contests and competitions worldwide. Here's the review for 2024 ! 2024 We are now over 4,901 members part of this informal "video mapping" artistic community on the Facebook group LIST OF INTERNATIONAL VIDEO MAPPING OPEN CALL & CONTEST 2024. This community is strengthened with meetings at some festivals... where names become friendships. In 2024, 35 organizations shared their information compared to 24 in 2023. Artists had the chance to participate in 18 video mapping contests organized in the world. We noticed that several festivals are now opted for an open call with a direct selection of artists (who are therefore paid for their work). This was the case with Zsolnay Fényfesztivál (Tamás Zádor) and the new Light Up Gwanghwamun in Seoul (Yohan Han) with a hybrid selection. New festivals While the majority of festivals take place in Europe, particularly in Germany, France, and Poland, several festivals in the USA have joined the group under the open call format (welcome: Let’s Glow Festival (Sean Mason), Digital Graffiti (John Colette), Blink (Josh Heuser), Illuminated Visions (Kati Angelov), LUMA festival with their open call for the Small Works category (Joshua Bernard Ludzki)). There is also a new great festival Luz de Antigua in the beautiful city of Antigua in Guatemala ( Willy Posadas ) which led to the emergence of new local artists such as Plaga studio ( Alejandro Campollo ) or Chesco Lab. We also note the rise of three major competitions in China, with the gigantic third edition of Chongqing Light Festival, the second edition of Shining Shanghai Light Festival, and a newcomer in Yifeng. The video platform Manamana ( Petra Věchtová ) serves as a great relay for these festivals. Additionally, we see the continuity of some competitions like Dublin Light Festival ( Tom Rohan ) with a double contest, Lunar in Bulgaria (MP-STUDIO), SSAmapping ( in Brasil and Mapsion in Finland ( Niko Tiainen ). Contests results from Asia ... The results of the competitions highlight certain trends. We see the strong vitality of Asian artists, especially Indonesians (Eltria, Ismoyo R Adhi and Fanikini, The Fox The Folks (Fadjar Kurnia), Firman M. ) and Chinese artists, who are very active in local competitions (CTC Lab, Depicting Territory). We should also note the victory of Japanese artist Kentaro Tanaka at the 1minute-PM ( Michiyuki Ishita), one of the oldest competitions still in activity. Another veteran, the Genius Loci Weimar (Hendrik Wendler), continues to promote three selected artists through a competition. ... To Germany Germany seems to provide an ecosystem conducive to artistic development. German artists swept most of the mapping awards at the recent IBSIC meeting by Rencontres Audiovisuelles ( Antoine MANIER ) winning the Grand Prize for Julian Hölscher , the Sound Design award for Sören Schaudel on the Jonas Denzel’s project, the Innovation Prize for Ruestungsschmie.de (philip modest schambelan Michał Banisch), and a Special Mention for Detlef Hartung. Additionally, Dirk Rauscher won both of audience and jury awards in Lille’s mapping contest and the audience during IMAPP’s Winners League (Tamás Vaspöri) won by Hungarian Ivó Kovács. Lastly, John Tettenborn, in partnership with American Kourtney Ross, is also a standout in several competition results, praised for their technical mastery. This reminds us of the German dominance in 2021 when various artists won five of the annual contests. About the jury When asked whether there’s a similarity in the results, statistics show that outcomes vary significantly each year. While some names reappear, this more reflects their talent and capacity for innovation and experimentation. No artist won two competitions this year and 45 were able to receive a distinction, showing the diversity of results. Since the implementation of the IMAPP Winners League concept, there has been regular collaboration among directors of the participating festivals, who frequently serve as jurors for the five major competitions (1minPM, Video Mapping Festival, Zsolnay light art, Genius Loci Weimar, and now, Chongqing light festival as a new partner). Of course, their expertise often leads to invitations to other competitions. However a renewal of juries would be an interesting evolution by integrating art critics specializing in digital art and media journalists. The creation of specialized press for video mapping to comment on results and analyze trends seems essential for consolidating the structuring of the video mapping field. Best of 2024 Julian Hölscher - Fête des lumières 2024, France The most striking image of 2024 might be Julian Hölscher's precise and innovative mapping on the iconic building of Saint Jean Cathedral during La fête des lumieres de Lyon. There is also the masterful use of AI combined with lasers by the Spanish duo VPM (Javier Canal Joan Nieto Paulo ) is also very intriguing, particularly in their project on the catedral de Notre Dame de la Treille during the Video mapping festival in Lille. ______ I would like to remind that the list of competitions, festivals or mapping projects, is not exhaustive on this Facebook group. Many opportunities remain to be discovered deep within the web. Other opportunities are aimed only at students, such as the León Light Fest in Mexico or the Fête des Images in France. I'd like to thank the festivals for offering these opportunities to experiment and discover both new and established talents... and a special thanks to those inviting the artists, transforming the competition into a meeting place. HOW TO CREATE DOME CONTENT By Jérémy Oury Jeremy Oury combines audio and visual skills to make singular digital forms as architectural mapping, immersive projection, fulldome, light installation and original creation for theater. Since 2014, his artwork was awarded in various international video mapping festivals (FIMG 2015, Luz y Vanguardias 2017) and fulldome festivals. His work has been shown in many exhibitions as Mutek MX 2022, Mapping festival 2021, ISEA 2019, FILE festival, Domo Lleno, MADATAC, and many others. He produced 5 short dome movie and actually he works as dome specialist for a long fulldome movie. He also co-create the first fulldome festival in Paris "Sous dome" at Universcience. This topic was discussed during a working group in the IBSIC/Video mapping festival 2023 in Lille. 1/ TO DO WHAT Immersive projection at 360° with immersive sound system Emersive / ARCAAN Collective & Jeremy Oury / Festival FDUK - UK & Domo Lleno (Col) Live artistic immersive experience Entropia / FRACTION / SATosphere (Ca) 2/ 2 families : planetarium VS geodesic mobile dome Initially for science and astronomy content VS digital art festival A lot of planetariums were built around the world since the 1930s. They are scientific and astronomical places with analog projection systems. Today, more and more planetariums are equipped with modern projection systems allowing to play video in real time and facilitating their punctual use as a place for digital art. Now, many festivals organize projections of abstract films and performances. In the same way, mobile geodesic domes are sometimes installed in the public space by certain festivals. The first planetarium dedicated to digital art is the SAT in Montreal. 3/ Different seating situations Planetariums are interesting architectural places and they all have their own particularity. without seat option (a) : ideal to configure the place as you wish, to imagine a total immersive space where the spectators can lie down or walking in the dome. It's ideal to perform in live. No axis or point of view imposed to the spectators. circular option (b) : Multiple viewpoints depending on the position of the spectator. frontal (c) and frontal tilted (d) : Frontal axis imposed. And a shift of the horizon is possible with the inclination of the dome. 4/ DIFFERENT DOMEMASTER PICS The main format is a spherical image embedded in a square format 8K - 8192 x 8192 or 4K - 4096 x 4096 with a square pixel Aspect Ratio (1:1) and a frame Rate at 30.00 fps or 60 fps The Master files could be shared as : PNG sequences (full quality, no compression, huge files) HAP codec (full quality, video codec) h265 CBR 100mbps (digest size files, compression) Different types of spatial distortion can be taken into consideration - depending on the result and the effect you want to achieve in the dome. Spherical reference / Cylindrical reference / Cubique reference 5/Creative process - 3D Cinema4D (Native camera) Export as spherical camera enabled and with the dome FOV. But C4D gives you a equirectangular video with only the top part (which is the upper hemispheric part that you can use for the dome). You must convert the equirectangular video as dome (with AE VR converter effect for example) Cinema4D (Blendy360cam additional plug in from https://blendy360cam.com) This plug-in render directly a domemaster file. Blender (Native camera Panoramic/Fisheye with Cycles) 6/Creative process - 2D From Equirectangular to fulldome (using a the superior part of a 8192x4096 equirectangular canva) or directly in spherical format (kaleidoscopic effect or circular draw pattern) : 7/ From live captation with VR camera device like insta360 pro or any devices with fish eye camera (A stitching step could be necesary). To make you dream - Eclipse creative 8/ Spatial immersive sound Sound is mixed in a virtual 3D space where you can put virtual speaker to generate each sound elements. You could have a render of the global sound with immersive, ambisonic or binaural device. From this mix, you can downmix it in : Mono, Stereo, binaural, 5.1, 7.1, 5.1.2, 7.1.2, first-order ambisonic (FOA) or higher-order ambisonic (HOA), etc. Some plug-ins : Soundfield by Rode https://rode.com/en/software/soundfield-by-rode#module_18 Noisemakers : https://www.noisemakers.fr/downloads/#1589280676683-c5928be3-7ab2 For Ableton Live : https://envelop.us/page/tools 9/ Format specificity Movements Anticipate movements in the domemaster's periphery: the larger the dome, the greater the distances covered in the dome. Decide on the point(s) of attention - pay attention to the distance between them. Pay attention to the start and stop of the movements to avoid the motion sickness Luminosity Keep the background dark and create high contrasted scene. Images near the zenith produce less parasitic light since images near the periphery. Free tools from Nest Immersion : http://nestimmersion.ca/parasit.html?fbclid=IwAR2uABz3XXEIOjW2CEE0KWKQ3h1TaSA3nRh3Od_ytuEHgEdbnsMgwbhKyAE FOV - field of view Sometimes you have to cheat with the horizon by moving it up a few degrees (here 10°) so that it is visible in the dome. 10/ Complicated simulation of dome ? It is difficult to interpret and extrapolate the result of what you are doing on your flat screen in a giant 360° immersive dome. A few options exist: https://www.orihalcon.co.jp/amateras/domeplayer/en/ https://www.festoonsoftware.com https://github.com/anodin/INSIDE_DOME 11/ Ressource website https://www.fddb.org is a database site regrouping all the places of diffusions (mostly planetariums), films, artists and events. We can see that the classic dome contents (scientific, for children, astronomical) dominate but little by little, more and more immersive experiences of abstract art and digital art appear.
