Intrigued by the relation between light and vision, I studied and did research until I found the animation technique for creating an illusion. When humans see a series of pictures showing sequential phases of animation, like a galloping horse, in a short amount of time, the brain gathers the visual data and perceives what you see as a motion. This is called “persistence of vision,” a theory from which modern cinematography was developed.

In the motion pictures, stories and motions are recorded onto films. Conversely, I question whether it is possible to record what we see onto other material that involves with the event, or is part of it, so that it could record feelings and meanings apart from the story alone. With this hypothesis, I started to create works by recording stories onto different materials. Every piece of work led me to new territories, people I have never known, and places I have never been. An example of my past work is “Textile Story” in which I created motion pictures from Thai textile patterns.

This work is inspired by stories reflected on the surface of a glass, and the desire to record those stories onto it. From my observation, each glass of water reflects stories, lifestyles, manners of the user through memory and time. Some glass represents an element that connects the spiritual world or sacred entities that people worship for wealth and prosperity. It is fascinating how these stories are still deeply rooted in our culture until the present day.

The time period recreated on the surface of glasses came from field observation on how glasses are used, what image they reflect, both visible and symbolical. The surface of glasses can be seen as canvasses; instead of brush and paint, it is drawn with light.

Glasses, therefore, are reflectors of society and culture, as well as chronicle of time. Whenever the light touch their surface, hidden stories are recounted. Each glass tells a different story, depending on type and how it is used.
