Intro: We are second-year Digital Media Arts students, and throughout our coursework, we have been exploring the "Village Guardian" — a rural symbol imbued with collective memory. We noticed that in traditional contexts, the village guardian is often seen as a marginal figure. But from another perspective, they actually serve as the most steadfast anchor within the rural social order. With this in mind, we sought to extract elements from folk narratives, geographical imagery, and the textures of everyday objects, transforming this information into a digital visual language to create our 3D mapping artwork, The Digital Village Guardian. By projecting the virtual guardian back onto village buildings, allowing it to stand once again within the rural landscape, we aim to evoke a viewing experience that feels both unfamiliar and intimately familiar — letting technology grow roots into memory, and casting a beam of digital light upon the forgotten protectors.
