media artist, sculptor and live visual performer
Intro: Frouke ten Velden, Media Artist and VJ-Sculptor. Artist Statement “As live visual performers, we bring our tools, which are basically just a set of rules, a composition or a method which enables us to work live. (…) I’m not necessarily referring to video, so even when I find myself welding sculptures. For me, it feels all the same: Creating content, content to work with, live.” She explores sculpture as an instrument within the context of a live performance trough the qualities of light and projection. Her work has been shown at various galleries and Art festivals like the Van Gogh Museum, Eye Film Institute, Amsterdam Dance Event- Art&Exhibition, TodaysArt festival and the international Rio mapping festival. Ten Velden has a background in electronic/techno music-scene and currently works as (live) scenographer and art director of theatre, music and dance performances. She has worked with The National Ballet, classical orchestras like The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and often finds herself on the cross section of various artistic scenes. She collaboarted with national and international composers, choregraphers and theatermakers alike and works as (live) scenographer for several Dutch mucicians like Opera Singer Tania Kross, pop bands like Doe Maar –Henny Vrienten and De Dijk. And is artdirector of the live shows for the indie band MY BABY. Besides her role as a maker and performer, she also teaches film and photography at The Rijksmuseum and taught Live Visual Performance and Video-Mapping at the Breitner academy – Amsterdam school of Arts. Annually she provides master-classes at the educational art-institutes like the HkU and VJ Academy Amsterdam. Ten Velden graduated the Amsterdam Art Academy in 2009 and was entitled Master of Arts, after earning her degree in Art History (BA) and Artistic Research (MA) at the University of Amsterdam.
