🇬🇧 By means of light, historical paintings come to life in a fantastic way and tell the stories that lie hidden within them. Who still goes to a museum today to linger in front of an old masterpiece? The hallowed halls are full of stories. The way we look at them today, however, is quite different from the way we looked at them at the time of their creation. Two hundred years ago, when Caspar David Friedrich was working on his painting „Das Eismeer“, the rugged icy landscape was above all an expression of an indomitable challenge. From today's perspective, the painting seems no less dramatic, yet there is always something worth protecting in the depiction of natural motifs. Nature, not as an adversary, but as something to be preserved.Studio Julian Hölscher has developed a new media format that makes historical works accessible to today's audience by conveying the paintings through contemporary ways of seeing. And we do this by means of precisely fitting video projection onto replicas of the old masterpieces. Through the audiovisual projection, we achieve a new visual impression that breaks with the expected visual impression of a painted canvas. - The subtle effect is fascinating. The digital layer becomes the link for artistic engagement with the work and a contemporary context. Our pilot project with the famous painting by Caspar David Friedrich was set up for the first time at the Weserburg Museum of Modern Art.You can find a video documentation of our project »vivid canvas« on our website www.julianhoelscher.com
