SHENZHEN ALGORAVE marks the first time this emerging experimental music culture will be introduced within a formal theater context in Shenzhen. Bringing the global phenomenon of Algorave into focus, the event showcases cutting-edge live coding, generative visuals, and tech-art. At the Shenzhen Robot Theater, over 300sqm screen, a music rave driven entirely by code is about to unfold.
Algorave is more than just a musical style; it is an attitude. It rejects the concealment of technology and refuses to treat algorithms as mere behind-the-scenes tools. At the heart of this performance is Livecoding—a key practice where artists write code in real-time to simultaneously generate sound and visuals. All audio and imagery are produced instantaneously during the performance (no pre-recorded content, no AI models). The audience can witness the code as it is written, gaining a direct understanding of how sound, rhythm, and visuals evolve through algorithmic logic. We will finish the night with a live DJ set with live coded visuals. We will showcase a variety of live coded sets from ambient to dance music.
Within the highly technical space of the Shenzhen Robot Theater, music is computed live, visuals grow from code, and rhythm, light, and structure are constantly rewritten. The event exists at the intersection of a music rave and an experimental tech-art performance—a real-time test of systems, control, and improvisation. Here, the audience becomes a collective presence enveloped in sound, light, and computation.

Char Stiles
MIT Media Lab, Future Sketches
Char Stiles is a computational artist, educator, and researcher. She works creatively in the lower levels of graphical computational systems & makes jokes about how computers work. She is currently an affiliate at the MIT Media Lab`s Future Sketches group researching the future of creative coding in performance. She is a part of the Livecode.nyc collective & she co-founded Hex House, an artist studio and event space in East Williamsburg. She has performed internationally, including festivals such as Electric Forest, Portola, and Mutek Nexus. She has lectured and led workshops at Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, University of Limerick, MIT, and NYU.
Livecoding is the performance of writing code that compiles to make visuals and music live, without AI. Antithetical to conventional electronic music performances, that are pre-prepared and opaque, in a livecoding performance the audience can see the code being written on-the-fly improvised music and visuals.

Arbor
Arbor is an artist interested in light as a medium of expression. Through the coordination of light in time, he creates works that blur the boundaries between performance, installation, and artifact.
Diffusion is an audiovisual performance composed of real-time simulations as a live-puppetered poetry of light and sound.
Featuring sound by Tzu Ni.
* This work contains flashing and flickering patterns, high-frequency sounds, and rapid changes in light and sound intensity. Please take care if you are sensitive to light or have photosensitive or auditory conditions.

Jessica Stringham (this.xor.that)
MIT Media Lab, Future Sketches
She creates visuals using custom live coding software written in Rust. this.xor.that’s real-time visuals incorporate geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and glitches driven by code expressions that incorporate MIDI, audio signals, and occasionally things like heart rate monitors or the act of drawing.
As a graduate researcher at MIT Media Lab`s Future Sketches group, Jessica explores ways to create and navigate vast parameter spaces through live coding, multi-modal input, and machine learning techniques. Previously a machine learning engineer at Spotify, they hold a BSc in Computer Science from Harvey Mudd College and an MSc in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. this.xor.that has performed in the US, the UK, and Spain.
Sidney San Martin (s4y)
s4y programs and moves with sound, lasers, and coordinate spaces. he designs custom tools and electronics for live performance and immersive art, and enjoys deeply technical work focused into small, quiet moments. he will be performing live, generative visuals over a DJ set by Arbor (~20m).
Sam Chin
MIT Media Lab, Responsive Environments
Sam Chin is an engineer and artist who works at the intersection of electronics and physical materials. She integrates circuitry with textiles and ceramics, creating large-scale interactive installations and curious objects that invite exploration. Her work includes developing the electronics for the Living Knitwork Pavilion at Burning Man’s Honoraria program, among other projects that explore what happens when technology meets traditional craft.
