Visitors to the Baccarat Hotel in New York are greeted by a shimmering wall of crystal, made of nearly two thousand illuminated Harcourt glasses. This artwork is the centerpiece of the hotel entrance – a wall of illuminated glassware reflected across the surfaces of a black mirrored box.
Sosolimited partnered with Hypersonic Engineering & Design to develop, program and fabricate this contemporary interpretation of the timeless Baccarat chandelier. Each iconic Harcourt 1841 glass, the oldest glass in the Harcourt collection, is lit by an independently controlled LED fixture, creating an entirely custom display.
Content follows a progression throughout the day, reflecting the mood of the hotel. The morning begins with slowly moving facets of crystalline geometry. In the late afternoon, as guests are meeting in the salon and preparing for the evening, the wall transforms to a field of flickering votive candles. As the clock strikes midnight, the piece is enveloped in plumes of smoke. Flourishes regularly take over the entire surface of the wall, surprising and delighting guests. At each hour and quarter of the hour, a dramatic chime takes over the entire wall.
