Teaching today requires a mix of disciplinary knowledge and expertise to tackle and engage with the many issues at stake. Media Art Nexus, experimental media art platform at the Nanyang Technological University Singapore, hopes to bridge the gap between the formal art education and connect NTU Singapore students with other media art programmes and cultural institutions locally and internationally. Such is its latest effort to co-curate an international art project together with the renowned Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany—one of the largest and most acoustically advanced concert halls in the world. ELMAN 2018 is creative art exchange between two distant urban media displays – the Elbphilharmonie Media Wall (Elphi) in Hamburg and the Media Art Nexus (MAN) at the NTU. As a part of the ELMAN University Project 2018, the emerging artists from the University of Applied Sciences Europe, Department Art & Design, Film + Motion Design Class, Campus Hamburg and the Nanyang Technological University Singapore, School of Art, Design and Media have created 44 artworks for both site-specific media platforms for concurrent projection one in Singapore and one in Hamburg. The locations cannot be more radically different in both the architecture of the space as well as geographically, culturally, and historically. The Elbphilharmonie is on the Elbe river and harbor island Grasbrook. Its large-scale media wall at the very entrance spans over 66 sq meters. Around 12,000 people from all over the world flock to see the building daily. Media Art Nexus NTU is 15 meters by 2 meters large led screen located in a busy, transient urban passageway at Nanyang Technological University Singapore. After almost half year in planning and making the works premiered simultaneously in Germany and Singapore in the last week of November of 2018.
