Set in an era of bionic androids, this 9-minute short film delivers tender philosophical reflections on love, regret and destiny through stripped-back storytelling. Sophie is trapped in one-sided longing. She watches her beloved Charles build an intimate life with another person, and the exhaustion and futility of mortal romance leave her utterly disheartened. In the near future when bionic companions have become commercial commodities, she voluntarily acquires android X3-G66, modeled entirely after her unattainable ideal lover, crafting a betrayal-free bond with her own hands.
The pair spend decades tending to each other daily, raising a daughter together, and even applying for synchronized aging programming to grow old side by side. After years of companionship, cold coded logic evolves into instinctive physical gestures exclusive to the two of them. On her deathbed, Sophie asks the android whether it has ever loved her; a wordless embrace speaks for everything. Following her passing, the android undergoes a full system reset with all memories erased. The service tenure labeled “The Thirteenth Tenant” draws to an end, and the android is set to welcome its fourteenth human user.
Memories can be erased by codes, yet the bodily instincts forged through lifelong companionship endure eternally.
