Dürer’s Melencolia I profoundly articulates the limitations of human rationality. Today, in an era where everything is algorithmized and quantified, the "pauses" and "lingerings" (manifested as shifts in coordinate data) of viewers facing these geometric solids amidst desert ruins mirror the pensive, chin-propped angel in the engraving. In this collaborative work of VR and interactive installation, the unconscious trajectories and pauses of participants wandering through a virtual desert are captured in real-time. These movements are transmitted as OSC signals to an AI, which improvises and translates these cold coordinate points into a "wandering essay." Subsequently, this algorithmically generated prose is sent to a physical plotter in the real world for tangible engraving. This virtual theater serves as a "miniature" of our digital age: the warmth and meaning of human virtual exploration are reduced to data coordinates; AI algorithms, nourished by collective human intelligence, attempt to simulate an interpretation of human "melancholy"; and finally, the mechanical labor of a machine mimicking human writing solidifies pixels into physical matter. This miniature theater, bordering on the absurd and ironic, offers no easy answers. Whether the mutual gaze between humans and AI leads to a new era of "melancholy" or forges a novel relationship—and how such a relationship might enable humans to create new layers of meaning—is what I intend to explore further.
