Imaginal is a real-time audioreactive dreamworld built for immersive space: an infinite, procedurally generated landscape that constructs itself from sound, around the viewer, as they move through it. Bass shapes the terrain underfoot. Mids and highs drive the color palette and the density of trees, flowers, and drifting petal fragments that surround the viewer on all sides. Overall loudness, beat detection, and rate of change guide the camera's flight through the scene, carrying the audience forward in a continuous spatial arc. Different frequencies shape different strata of the world. Nothing is pre-rendered. The space is being constructed, continuously, by the music itself.
The work is designed to wrap the audience in its environment. It can be set to a cinematic dream score that carries viewers through a composed emotional journey, or tuned to live microphone input–voices, ambient sound, the room itself–so that the landscape responds not only to music but to the presence of the people inside it.
Imaginal takes its name from a concept in philosophy and psychology that describes a space between fantasy and literal reality. The piece renders this as a place the viewer can inhabit rather than merely observe–a world that is always becoming, responsive and unrepeatable, built anew in every moment of attentive listening.
