Commissioned by UCCA Shanghai for the collaborative installation project with League of Legends: Arcane, Interwoven Realms delves into the game’s worldview, where “Hextech” represents a fusion of magic and technology. Through this work, I aimed to explore the dynamic between these two forces, ultimately recreating iconic moments from the animated series via immersive installation and video art.
Rather than a mere mechanical construct, Interwoven Realms unfolds as a live audiovisual experience. The structure, crafted entirely in metal, expands ancient crystal incantations into three-dimensional forms. At its heart lies a blue crystal—symbolizing Hextech—whose contact with electrodes activates industrial lighting, transmuting magical formations into technological luminescence that projects onto custom-made visuals.
Surrounding the central installation, a 360-degree panoramic video unfolds as a historical scroll of technology and magic. It begins with the birth of a universe: atomic clouds gradually resolve into cosmic vistas, as elementary symbols of magic emerge and multiply across the sky. Then, through rifts in spacetime, mathematical formulae and geometric shapes drift into the expanse, merging into the fabric of the cosmos. A final burst of cosmic particles culminates in a grand图腾 of science and magic—a synthesis that dissolves and renews in cycles, mirroring the transition from an age of sorcery to one of science, and their ultimate convergence.
Interwoven Realms has been a fascinating creative journey. Venturing into the unfamiliar realm of magic opened my eyes to its wondrous appeal. As someone once narrowly anchored in rational thought, I am grateful for how this project revealed unseen horizons—and the joy it brought in the process.
