The Zoetrope, also known as the shadow lamp or trotting horse lantern, is a dynamic shadow-play device rooted in traditional Chinese folk art. Driven by the heat of a candle, the rotating structure projects cyclic shadow narratives onto surrounding surfaces. Through this interplay of light and motion, complex visual metaphors emerge—repeating figures that symbolically reflect humanity’s futile resistance to the linear progression of time.
Each frame briefly halts, yet the circular mechanism ensures a seamless loop, creating the illusion of permanence through repetition. This temporal paradox resonates with philosophical notions such as the Buddhist concept of “eternity in the moment,” as well as with the scientific idea of “time before time.”
This work utilizes the three dimensions of time, space, and perception to explore cyclic transformation. Through spatial-temporal layering and symbolic recurrence, it reflects on the essence of life’s eternal return.
