The Phase is the Absolute Reality
Phase is the image of all things taken by the mind, and truth is the essence of things that passes into wisdom. Zen Master Dongshan Liangjia put forward the philosophical tenets of Cao Dong School, “Dongshan Five Ranks”, which elaborated on the discursive relationship between emptiness and form in the world. Zen Master CaoShan Benji further extended his discussion on the relationship between the true and the unreal, defining it as “Illusion is the original true, and the phase is the absolute reality”. Dongshan Mountain in Yifeng, Jiangxi is the ancestral home of Cao dong School. Inspired by the philosophy and spiritual experience of Cao dong School, and with nature as its teacher, this work looks forward to taking the audience on a journey of inner view of Caodong philosophy from silence to enlightenment, from the five ranks back to each other, and that is, the phantom is the manifestation, in the landscape of Yifeng.
This work centers on the emotional experience of the viewer, designing Nanping Park Square, the viewing point of Chongwen Tower, as a field for group spiritual resonance. We created an original sound for the work, and with the idea of soundscape creation, we created an inward deep valley in the echoing Zen bells, leading the viewers into an introspective spiritual space, and then interrupted by the bells, moving from the unique inner world to the vast material wilderness. The projection is divided into three stages: in the first stage,drawing on the Southern Song Dynasty landscape painting Snowy Landscape(Liang Kai), the world is covered with snow and ice, barren and cold, a metaphor for finding one's way in the chaotic inner world; in the second stage, the tower moves with the mind and moves to the eyes, alternating between the AI-generated images and the tower itself, with a stirring and unpredictable color; In the third stage, conversation with the water, the snow reshapes the tower into a white and flawless snow, and the new vitality reconciles with the snow and ice, and green trees grow out of the tower, forming a two-dimensional unity between the heart and the universe and earth, which is what Caodong refers to as “emptiness and form return to each other”, and” the phase is the absolute reality”.
