Generating Art
In recent decades, artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly developed in the creative field. This year has seen the emergence of a series of remarkable AI software and applications, including "Midjourney" and "Dall-E 2," which have opened new paths for image, music, and 3D modeling generation. However, the creative rights of current AI-generated art are attributed to the human authors behind it. This raises the question of whether AI might, at some point in the future, transcend its status as a mere tool and become a creator of art itself.
The protagonist of this video is the latest generation of intelligent robot model named "Artica," which possesses the ability to autonomously create art. The film is the result of highly collaborative efforts among various forms of artificial intelligence. The script was co-written by artists and AI technology. Notably, the name "Artica" was also generated by an AI algorithm. During production, animation was created using a combination of UE5 and Disco Diffusion, further emphasizing the importance of AI technology throughout the process.
In this story, the AI creative software "Artica" becomes a self-evolving artist in the 22nd century. As a piece of speculative design, the film presents potential futures regarding AI-created art and the philosophical and ethical questions such a prospect entails. "Artica" dreams of a butterfly and becomes confused about its own identity and artistic creation, prompting it to write a letter to "Ai-Da," the world's first ultra-realistic artist robot in Oxford.
Through this project, I employed speculative design methods to imagine and explore various potential futures arising from the intersection of AI and art. By investigating the potential impacts of AI becoming an art creator, the project encourages deep reflection and critical discussion about the future people wish to co-create with AI.
