MATA is a powerful public art installation that brings attention to the devastating effects of accelerated deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, one of the most crucial ecosystems on our planet. In 2020, a record-breaking 11,000 km² of commercially-driven deforestation was recorded, an area 70% larger than the average of the last decade.
The installation was designed to shock and awe the people of São Paulo, giving them an immersive experience that highlights the violence of the fires and destruction of nature. Custom software was created to simulate the infernos in real-time, 24 hours a day, on large LED panels measuring 8 meters high and 4 meters wide. The sound of the destruction was accompanied by large speakers surrounding the exhibition. The passing of daylight was synchronized with the movement of the sun at the installation site, adding further realism to the piece.
MATA was presented as part of Virada Cultural in December 2020 at the popular public space of Largo da Batata in São Paulo, Brazil. The exhibition aimed to raise awareness and inspire action to protect the Amazon rainforest and its vital role in our world
