The work was inspired by the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province and the experience of climbing North Mount Heng. As early as before the establishment of Buddhism, brahmins in India stipulated that there was a "Vanaprastha" in the four stages of life, that is, monasticism and seclusion. Among them, "dhyana" is a kind of practice commonly used in seclusion, and meditation needs to choose a quiet place between trees and rocks. According to the Buddhist sutras, the first thing to do in meditation is to observe images, to observe all kinds of appearance of the Buddha, so that after meditating, there will be all kinds of hallucinations of seeing the Buddha. Therefore, the whole work has three pictures: one is overlooking the mountains, the other is wandering in the mountains, and the third is the illusion of seeing Buddha after the trance. The Buddha statue is selected from the Three upright Buddhas of Buddhism, namely, the Dipamkara representing the past, the Sakyamuni representing the present, and the Maitreya representing the future. The whole work expresses the Buddhist thought of dhyana.
