Intuited Landscapes

These data visualization works show hundreds of movements of pupils of the eyes of people watching videos of nature landscapes simultaneously.
Around 300 observers were invited to watch video footage of nature in front of a screen while light, color and size of the pupils of their eyes were captured by an eye tracker device.
Eye Tracker devices are used in Neuroscience Laboratories which can record the position of the eyes and other variables referred to the vision of an image using an infrared camera. A super fast software allows to record moments where the eyes stop for a while - they are called the “fixation points” - and the movement of the eyes called “saccades”. We can see those parts of the image or a video that are important for the vision cognition process of them. It is as if one were capable of looking at the world through the other one's eyes.

When the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges knew he would become blind, he started to memorize colors and gave them special names for remembering. He was creating a colored memory for the moment the vision was lost.
Also nature can be lost in the future as we know nowadays, if we don't change our attitude toward the planet. A natural world that could disappear and remain in our memory as an impression only. Like Borges, maybe we’ll need to memorize our perception of nature and record our gazes in case we lose it forever.

I have taken nature scenes of video footage about trees, forests, sea, flowers, volcanoes, clouds and shown them to many people in front of the eye tracker. The work is created by the movements of the eyes, the light and the size of the pupils of many persons reconstructing the natural scenes in a collective way.
I wanted to record and memorize the very intimate gestuality of hundreds of gazes of the viewers. As if it were a techno-impressionist process, I intend to engage the viewers with the very own experience of perception of light, color and gesture of the eyes shaping the world to remember it.



** The video presented here, exhibits excerpts of the different pieces that are part of Intuited Landscapes Series.
They are looped 4K resolution video, variable duration, no sound.
These pieces can be perfectly settled in big screen projections or led screens.
They may be settled in gardens or natural environments in the city taking advantage of the surrounding sound landscape. Also, by contrast, the work can be displayed well in downtown buildings as a vestige of nature.
In case to be selected, videos will be developed specially for the occasion adapting them to visual conditions of the environment with a proper duration and resolution.
