«Symbiosis» is an interactive immersive biofeedback installation. Using sensor technology the audience’s breathing is measured and visualised in moving LED lights. Having the capacity of 8 active participators, the LED filled dome is an immersive magical environment that people can walk into. Once inside they sit on benches equipped with custom sensors that pick up their breathing. Participants are encouraged to breathe deeply through the diaphragm, which is most beneficial to health and wellbeing.
Each participant is assigned a different colour, and will see their breath visualised in LED light moving to the top of the dome. When/if participants synchronise breathing, the lights grow out together from the top as one flower.
«Symbiosis» is an organic synthesis between technology and art, transgressing the commonly perceived limits of both. In Symbiosis, the experience of art becomes a creative act of the participant, and technology, - a tool for intimate human connection. It creates another form of communication, beyond language and inhibitions. And teaches beneficial diaphragm breathing as part of the artwork experience, with an aim to create a collective transcendent experience.
In a festival setting Symbiosis provides a calming safe space where one can sit and focus on breath to re-centre and connect. There are different versions of Symbiosis in smaller and larger scales, and adaptable structures to social distancing measures. It has been shown at various UK Light, music and other festivals and European Burning Man Events. Symbiosis won SHINE Award in 2017 as part of LightNight Leeds.
