“How will one feel if he is erased by the system, while others are not?” This interactive installation examines how people feel when witnessing their disappearance in digital media, at the age when images on social networks is to a large content considered as equivalent to one’s existence in real life. The installation creates a vivid mirror with the projection and a web camera. When people start to observe themselves in the projection, one of them is randomly chosen to be the victim. His figure begins to fade, and eventually dissolves into the background, as if he were never there. Once the victim turns his head away from the camera or leaves the playground, the system resumes to its normal state—a mirror, and patiently awaits for the next victim.
By playing tricks on the participants’ reflection in the digital media, the artwork transforms the space into a cyberpunk environment, initiating a discussion about one’s perception of digital media, relationship with community and agency under system surveillance. It baffles participants with a paradoxical fact that one has to endure his dissolution in order to witness the whole process of disappearance. In this way, digital media is entitled to the ability to influence one’s perception of existence in reality. When it happens to one participant among a group of them, one’s suffer is probably not even noticed by others. Here it visualizes the feeling of estrangement caused by physical co-existence without spiritual connection. In addition, it is even worse to think what if a system’s power, in this case its caprice to erases anyone existence, is extended to the physical reality.
