Science is continually looking closer or farther to help to unravel nature's phenomena. Utilizing a reaction-diffusion system, Morphogerador is a reflection on biological processes that create structural color as we see in such insects like the Morpho butterfly, and many species of beetles. These reaction-diffusion systems were applied by Alan Turning in his seminal article "The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis" to describe biomorphological systems. Morphogerador uses similar algorithms are used to create an ever evolving, yet stable system that continually brings the perspective both closer and wider without ever reaching the smallest or widest view.
Audio is from "Laminar Flow" a binaural field recording of the machine room of the INL clean room facility in Braga, from 2018.
This work was made during a Scale Travels residency at the Iberian Nanosystems Laboratory with the assistance of the Nanophotonics Group in Braga, Portugal.
Matthew Biederman works across media and milieus, architectures and systems, communities and continents since 1990. He creates works where light, space and sound reflect on the intricacies of perception. Since 2008 he is a co-founder of Arctic Perspective Initiative, with Marko Peljhan working on throughout the circumpolar region.
