Transitable Plastic. Singapore 2018

We visited Singapore last March invited by the I Light Marina Bay festival to carry out a piece of light to bring attention and raise awareness about plastic binge, an issue that we always bear in mind which we have developed in different formats.

We collected bottles for months with the help of people and from places of large consumption such as hotels, restaurants, shopping malls… which donated us the empty ones for more than a month. We finally obtained more than 20,000 units with which we shaped the piece.

We prepared and vacuum packed all the material creating hard solid panels with which we built 7 big mobile walls we hung from a structure under Esplanade Bridge, one of the busiest transit areas on the bay.

We practically took over the entire bridge front leaving narrow side corridors, so visitors were forced to go through our walls of light and bottles in order to cross over to the other side of the bay.

We lighted the piece with a cold, neutral light which enhanced the glint of the plastic material and brought out the color of the labels allowing to easily guess which are the city’s most popular beverage brands.

As visitors entered the piece, landmarks disappeared so they had to get the plastic out of the way in order to avoid getting stuck in the corridors and to get to the other side, a healthier, more open place where they could breathe fresh air.

A more-than-a-minute-long walk among plastics which could bring about a bit of asphyxia and inevitably the thought of plastic and its related problems.

The piece remained installed for 4 weeks. Afterwords, all the used material was properly sorted and recycled. Singapore has a pioneering recycling system in the world.

We would like to thank all the people who helped us make the piece work. Special thanks to Julie, who invited us to participate and accompanied us at all times, managing everything and also helping us with the physical work. Thanks to Meli, to our great volunteers who did their best and also provided creative solutions. Thanks to the personnel from Pico who took care of the technical area and set up the piece. Also thanks to the festival organizers who took us to Singapore and patiently fulfilled all our requests.
