Artistic Attitude and Background

MANA:Sijia,

MANA: Welcome to this captivating interview with the multi-talented artist, Sijia Chen. Sijia's diverse background as a producer, art director, UX/UI designer, media artist, architect, and CAA British Pilot is truly remarkable. Today, we will delve into Sijia's immersive spatial experiences, sound capturing techniques, and the intersection of art, technology, and aviation.

MANA:Sijia, thank you for joining us today. Let's start by discussing your artistic journey. Could you share with us your background in architecture and how it has influenced your current artistic practice?

Sijia: Thank you for having me. Before coming to London, I completed five years of architectural education and practice in Beijing. During that time, I had the opportunity to participate in the experimental construction of the Kingcombe Center at the Dorset Hooke Park experimental base of the Architecture Association in the UK. Additionally, I explored the use of robotic sewing in architecture at Tongji University and Digital Future at the University of Stuttgart. Architecture, although a broad and traditionally slow discipline, instilled in me a sense of impatience. I yearned for quicker results and a more immediate sense of the experiential qualities of space. I began to question whether there were faster ways to construct these immersive spatial experiences.

MANA: It's fascinating how your architectural background has shaped your artistic perspective. Could you elaborate on the concept of immersive spatial experiences and how sound capturing plays a role in your work?

Sijia: Absolutely. I believe that architecture is more than just physical structures; it is an opportunity to create immersive and transformative experiences. Sound capturing is an integral part of my artistic practice. Sound, for me, acts as a method of listening to the space, people's character, and even the materials used in the creation of my works. It allows me to create multi-sensory performances and explore the interaction between people, sound, and dynamic spaces. By reconstructing sound and visual systems, and combining motion and lighting, I aim to engage the audience in a dialogue with the space itself.

2:《Son et Culinaire》
Detailed Exploration of "Son et Culinaire" and "Wuhan Hot Dry Noodles”
Sijia:《Son et Culinaire》
MANA: Let's delve into your notable works, "Son et Culinaire" and "Wuhan Hot Dry Noodles." Could you provide us with a detailed understanding of these projects and how they showcase the connections between food, sound, and the cities they represent?
Sijia: "Son et Culinaire" is an interactive, audiovisual performance that merges sound, dance, and culinary processes. It aims to bring to life the performative and ritual aspects of meal production, showcasing the often-unnoticed sonic particularities of different cooking methods. By isolating and framing the sound of cooking, we can experience a new sonic landscape with its own complexities and rhythms.
"Wuhan Hot Dry Noodles," on the other hand, generates a multi-sensory experience through an immersive audiovisual performance. It explores the connections between space, human characters, and culinary processes. By capturing the sonic output of a chef's actions during the noodle-making process, we create a live audiovisual dance performance. Through this project, I aim to showcase the unseen energy and 'Chi' of cities by reframing the audience's perception of Wuhan beyond their preconceived notions.
MANA:《Son et Culinaire》
MANA: It's truly intriguing how Son et Culinaire highlights the unseen sonic aspects of cooking and translates them into a visual and performative experience. Could you tell us more about the performers' role and how they interact within this audiovisual system?
Sijia: Certainly. Son et Culinaire involves two performers who participate in an interactive system. They control and influence each other's actions, generating a novel and dynamic dance performance with its own unique aesthetic. The sonic output of the cook's actions serves as the foundation for the live audiovisual performance, creating a space for improvisation and exploration. Each performer's movements and gestures are translated into visual representations in real time, forming a dynamic interplay between sound, motion, and visuals. This interactive system allows for a creative feedback loop, where the performers respond and adapt to each other's actions, resulting in a truly immersive and collaborative experience.
MANA: Your approach to merging sound, movement, and visuals in Son et Culinaire is truly innovative. Could you share any specific examples or experiences from the project that have been particularly memorable or impactful?
Sijia: One memorable experience was when we explored different performers and dishes within the interactive system. Each combination resulted in unique creative outputs, generating a diverse range of audiovisual performances. It was fascinating to witness how different cooking methods and performers influenced the overall aesthetic and energy of the piece. This process allowed for a constant exploration of new creative possibilities and pushed the boundaries of what can be achieved within the realm of immersive experiences. The audience's engagement and response to these performances were also incredibly rewarding, as they were able to witness and participate in the transformative power of sound, movement, and visuals.
