Introduction

Walking China: Stories yet to be told is an exhibition made in collaboration with the Out of Eden Walk, co-curated by writer and explorer Paul Salopek and film and literature scholar June Ke, and featuring over a dozen artists from all over China. Walking China presents stories that roam widely across knowledge systems, reflecting on how walking changes perceptions of time and being and how we might approach encounters with unfamiliar cultures and indigenous knowledges as starting points for dialogue. Featured artists include Salopek’s walking partners, folk artists encountered along the way and artists who meditate on walking.

Walking China uncovers local histories and stories that have been obscured by dominant discourses. The stories collected here are curated with an eye for destabilizing sedentary narratives, highlighting how indigenous cosmologies rethink nature/culture binaries and how categories of history and identity are constantly in flux.

Walking China: Stories yet to be told is organized in partnership with Out of Eden Walk and NYU Shanghai Dean of Arts & Sciences.

The Out of Eden Walk in China is hosted by Documentary Center, Shanghai Media Group (SMG).
